4 UX Trends We’re Excited About for 2019

Working in digital means it’s crucial to stay up-to-date on the latest UX trends. It’s the part of our industry that dictates which direction new technologies will take.

UX: possibly the two most overused letters in the web industry? Maybe so, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that user experience is at the core of literally everything we do as designers, developers and creatives. Whether we like it or not. So, as we’re a few months into 2019 now, we thought it was time to discuss the UX trends we’re excited about for the rest of the year.

Here’s what we’re excited about for UX in 2019

We’re just gonna jump straight in with some of the directions we’re expecting UX research and advancement to go in this year.

Seamless experience across multiple devices

By now, we all know what responsiveness is. Using a web page or an app from one device to the next isn’t anything new – we’ve been hopping from desktop to smartphone for a good few years now. However, that doesn’t mean UX can’t be improved when it comes to cross-device responsiveness. And we’re not just talking about websites fitting onto any size screen, 2019 is going to be the year that ‘device-agnostic’ experience becomes mainstream.

So, what exactly are we talking about?

Device-agnostic refers to a continuous journey across devices. Essentially, you can pick up where you left of whether you’re near your smart home speaker, putting on your Apple Watch or sitting on the train with your laptop. For example, if you ask Alex to order you a pizza, you should be able to track it when you pick up your phone and get alerts on your Apple Watch when it arrives. We’re expecting (and hoping) to see this concept refined more and more throughout 2019.

Advanced design prototyping

Prototypes are the best way of communicating a design concept to a client or a user before the real product is actually developed. Static designs are great for showing off UI but when it comes to UX, a working prototype is so much more beneficial. There are loads of great prototyping tools out there, such as Marvel, Figma, Adobe XD and InVision. However, we know that this is an area that will really be shaking things up in the UX world in 2019.

Of course, this means that as the other aspects of UX become more advanced, they’ll become an integral part of prototyping. We’re talking voice assistance, VR, augmented reality, team collaboration and device-agnosticism to name a few. Look out for InVision’s improved integration with Jira and exciting new features on Twitter’s prototype app twttr.

Personalisation: goodbye to one-size-fits-all

Since UX came about in the last decade, designers have been focused on creating a streamlined approach that would work for every user. Whilst this has worked so far, we suspect that we’re going to see a more personalised approach in 2019. Creating a one-size-fits-all concept for your product is the most timely and cost-effective way to do things. It makes sense. But now, we’re presented with more varied users than ever before and they’re all looking for something different.

From something as simple to “Welcome back, Emma.” to more complex features that give you real-time recommendations based on your previous actions, personalisation is the latest direction for UX creatives.

Voice-activated interfaces

With “OK, Google” becoming a commonplace phrase in households around the world, it’s pretty obvious that voice-activation is a huge part of our every day lives. But it has so much room for improvement. Listening can be fine-tuned for better accuracy. Maybe one day we’ll be able to choose the voice of our assistant like we would our desktop wallpaper. According to Deloitte Global, the industry for smart home speakers is going to be worth $7 billion by the end of this year. It’ll definitely be worthwhile for tech companies!

We need to start moving past basic operations like playing music and getting reminders. So, what’s next? We predict we’ll start seeing language capabilities expanding, more accurate speech recognition and concierge-like services in hotels around the world.

UX is an exciting sector of our industry. We’ve just outlined four UX trends in this post but of course, there’s so much more to come and the possibilities are endless. What are you hoping to see in 2019?
