Sewing Machines Direct: One Year Update

Time is flying and we can’t quite believe it’s been one whole year since we launched the new Sewing Machines Direct Hyvä website!

After developing a show-stopping Magento website for Sewing Machines Direct (SMD) back in 2015, the brand has seen tremendous growth. That’s why they came back to us in need of a more powerful ecommerce site to handle both spikes in traffic and their growing, extensive product inventory. We created a new ecommerce website with the state-of-the-art Hyvä, to maximise performance, boost conversions and improve the user journey. Now it’s been a year since launch, we wanted to take a look back and see how Hyvä has propelled their brand even further. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Let’s flashback to this time last year when we launched the new Hyvä website for Sewing Machines Direct. Although their existing Magento 2 website was already lightning-fast and offered a streamlined ecommerce journey, we knew that with Hyvä we could future-proof their site and business. Don’t be mistaken for thinking that this was a straightforward migration project though, we re-built the site from the ground up utilising our Hyvä development skills and creative design flair to ensure it would be a cut above the rest. We ensured UX and UI improvements, enhanced navigation, optimised page speed, modernised promotional banner designs and optimised product page layouts to convert.

Ongoing Hyvä optimisation and performance improvements

Following the Hyvä site launch in January, we have continuously refined and optimised the new frontend to ensure optimal performance for SMD Since launching, we’ve enhanced performance with various improvements including:

  • Implementing new payment methods, ensuring seamlessly communication with Hyvä as opposed to the default Magento checkout
  • Switching image delivery from Image Engine to ImageKit to improve PageSpeed scores
  • Resolving crawlability and SEO issues flagged by Ahrefs and PageSpeed Insights
  • Improving indexable filters and fixing sitemap generation issues for complex category structures

Integrated new finance payment provider

One of the most important pieces of work we undertook this year was integrating Omni Capital Retail Finance for SMD. By utilising Autify Digital, we were able to integrate the new finance payment provider seamlessly into SMD’s website. This was a hugely important task as SMD’s inventory features many high-value items and by offering finance options to consumers, we can help to boost conversions and revenue for the brand.

Platform maintenance and upgrades

Alongside ongoing Hyvä performance improvements, we’ve also handled all platform maintenance over the year such as:

  • Emergency CVE patches
  • Regular Magento security patches and upgrades
  • Moving transactional emails to Postmarkapp for improved reliability

52.12% increase in Total Revenue

Since we launched SMD’s Hyvä website, it hasn’t just been about fixing bugs, it’s been about continuous UX improvement and optimisation of technical capabilities to ensure that the brand are set up for success. As a result, SMD  have seen an incredible 52.12% increase in Revenue year-on-year, which is music to our ears as we absolutely love seeing our clients succeed! Not only that, overall traffic is also up 9.48%, demonstrating the power of web design when it comes to boosting both profits and organic visibility.
