How to Choose the Right Ecommerce Platform for Your Industry

Choosing the right ecommerce platform is one of the most important decisions a business will ever make.

Many brands often choose an ecommerce platform based on what’s popular at the time or what a competitor is using, rather than what actually fits their individual operation and brand image. A fashion brand, a flooring supplier and a travel company might all sell products online, but their requirements are wildly different; From pricing models and checkout flows to customer accounts and fulfilment, the platform that works brilliantly for one industry can be a nightmare for another. That’s why we’ve created this guide to break down how to choose the right ecommerce platform based on what you sell, how you sell it and who you sell to. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Why platform choice should be industry-specific

Ecommerce platforms aren’t all built equally, but no matter which you choose, your platform will be the backbone of how your business operates. Not only do ecommerce platforms dictate how your website looks and operates on a day-to-day basis, they also dictate precisely how products are structured, how customers log in, how prices are calculated, how orders are fulfilled and how well your team works together. If you look at various industries, their needs will be vastly different;

  • A beauty brand may need subscriptions and seamless product bundles
  • A B2B wholesaler may need customer-specific pricing and reordering capabilities
  • A travel business may need availability, dates and streamlined booking forms

Trying to force all of these advanced features and functionalities into the same type of platform leads to complex workarounds, plugins, technical lag and poor UX. But the right platform should support your business model straight out of the box, not fight against it.

Understanding the main ecommerce platforms

Before exploring which platform works best for each ecommerce sector, it’s useful to understand the broad types of ecommerce platforms available and what they’re designed to do;

  • Shopify js a hosted, all-in-one ecommerce platform that’s easy to manage and fast to launch, while Shopify Plus adds enterprise-level functionality for rapid growth retailers and DTC brands. Shopify is perfect for businesses that want simplicity, speed and strong ecommerce functionality without heavy technical overheads, but it can restrict capabilities in some cases so be sure to discuss with your digital agency before switching platforms.
  • Adobe Commerce (Magento) is a highly customisable platform built specifically for complex operations. Adobe Commerce / Magento is especially well-suited for B2B, large-scale retail and multi-store setups as it offers extensive flexibility in pricing, product structure and integrations. Making it perfect for businesses with sophisticated or complex workflows but not great for brands who prioritise simplicity.
  • Hyvä is a modern frontend framework for Magento / Adobe Commerce that dramatically improves performance and user experience, making Magento stores faster and more intuitive while retaining full backend flexibility. Hyvä is great for brands that want to harness the power of Magento and have complex operations, but want a leaner, faster frontend.
  • Aero Commerce is a UK-based platform designed specifically for wholesale and complex ecommerce operations. Aero Commerce is ideal for businesses that need trade-specific features like customer-specific pricing, bulk ordering and ERP integrations.
  • WooCommerce is a flexible, open-source plugin for WordPress that turns a simple website into a functioning ecommerce store. WooCommerce is ideal for brands that already have a WordPress site or want full control over customisation, SEO and content-led commerce. It’s well-suited to small-to-medium businesses, lifestyle brands and sectors where content plays a big role alongside product sales.

Which platform is right for my industry?

1. Fashion & Clothing

Fashion ecommerce requires tons of variant management, high-volume product pages, promotions and simplified returns processes. Shopify Plus or Magento / Adobe Commerce are ideal for most brands, but larger retailers may benefits from Hyvä for more robust, powerful and faster operations.

2. Beauty & Wellness

Beauty brands often combine subscriptions, bundles and loyalty programs and as a result, ecommerce platforms must handle recurring billing, refills and rich content. Shopify Plus, Magento and Hyvä all provide the integrations and scalability needed for beauty brands to drive growth and success. WooCommerce is also a strong option for smaller beauty or wellness brands, particularly for subscription products and those who utilise content-led marketing.

3. Homeware & Lifestyle

Homeware ecommerce often involves large catalogues of products, extensive filtering options and emotive storytelling. Shopify Plus is great for most interior and homeware brands, while Magento / Adobe Commerce supports very large inventories or highly customised catalogues.

4. Flooring, Paving & Tiles

Flooring, paving and tile businesses require complex pricing (square metre, pallet, bulk, pack), quotes and delivery rules. Adobe Commerce / Magento or Hyvä are fantastic platforms for handling trade accounts and order management both effectively and efficiently. WooCommerce is generally not recommended for this sector due to complex pricing and workflow requirements.

5. Electrical Wholesalers, Trade Suppliers & B2B

B2B buyers need account-specific pricing, fast re-ordering capabilities and advanced ERP integrations. Aero Commerce, Adobe Commerce / Magento and Hyvä all provide the necessary flexibility and functionality to watch your brand soar, whether you’re an electrical wholesaler, building merchant or ironmongery retailer.

6. Hospitality & Leisure:

Hotels, restaurants and attractions sell experiences and are not quite traditional ecommerce platforms. Platforms for this industry need flexible booking logic, clear availability and mobile-friendly, responsive checkouts to ensure they’re set up for success. Shopify websites with added booking integrations work well, while headless builds can suit more complex setups.

7.Travel & Experience Brands

Travel websites must manage availability, multi-currency pricing, cancellations and trust signals. Headless commerce offers flexibility for custom journeys, while Shopify Plus with travel integrations handles mid-market needs efficiently. Smaller experience providers or content-led travel platforms can also benefit from WooCommerce.

Choosing the right platform

Many ecommerce design projects fail not because of design or marketing, but because the platform doesn’t fit the business. Common mistakes include using Shopify for complex B2B pricing, Magento for simple DTC stores, ignoring growth plans or operational workflows and developers deciding without collaborating with the brand itself. The key to choosing the right platform for your brand is to choose one that serves how you sell, not the other way around. Start by asking yourself a few questions:

  • Do your customers mostly browse or reorder?
  • Do you need accounts, pricing tiers, or trade discounts?
  • Are you selling experiences, physical products or both?
  • Do you operate internationally
  • How fast are you scaling?

The answers to these questions should guide you to the platform that best supports your business model and long-term growth. Choosing the right ecommerce platform is a strategic business decision that can shape the growth, efficiency and user experience of your business for years to come. By understanding the strengths of platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Hyvä and Aero Commerce, and by asking the right questions about your customers, products and growth plans, you can select a solution that empowers your business rather than holding it back.

What our customers are saying

We're absolutely thrilled with the work Limely have done for us. Taking our website to the next level with Magento 2 was the best thing we ever did, we'll be continuing to work together for the foreseeable!

We are really pleased with our new website and the support and great service Limely have provided during the whole process. Not only are Limely excellent at what they do, but are a friendly, approachable team who put their clients' best interest at the forefront of their work.

The site itself looks great but the way that the whole team were prepared to go the extra mile, including helping me with the brilliantly-written content shows how much they care about their work. Thank-you to the whole team and I look forward to working with you again soon!

I was very pleased with the quality of the websites which Limely built for us. They took a complicated brief and created a bespoke solution which kept everything as simple as possible. The team are a pleasure to work with and I wouldn't hesitate in working with them again for future projects. An excellent web agency.

Our brief was a custom website, with lots of complicated functions along the way, and Limely have smashed it and built us an amazing website. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking to have a new website created, their knowledge, experience and professionalism is the best.

What can I say... the guys at Limely are a dream to work with! Not only have they made our website something to be incredibly proud of but we have made some fab friends in them! Thank you so much for everything!
