Google has just announced its latest innovation in the world of AI!
Last week, Google launched their latest AI tech dubbed Veo. The new AI video generator has disrupted the industry by launching just a few months after OpenAI launched their version of text-to-video software, Sora. So far, mainstream text-to-video AI outcomes have been rather disappointing but it appears that Veo is set to change everything! Join us as we delve into Google’s latest tool.
What is Google Veo?
Veo is the most advanced AI video generation model that Google has ever released; Capable of generating high-quality videos at 1080p resolution in various visual styles. Overall, the new video generation model is aimed at making video production accessible to everyone and anyone, whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker or complete novice. Google claim that the model;
“accurately captures the nuance and tone of a prompt, and provides an unprecedented level of creative control — understanding prompts for all kinds of cinematic effects, like time lapses or aerial shots of a landscape.”
The flow chart below from Google demonstrates how the technology works and is pretty cool to understand if you’re a little nerdy like us! Veo not only allows users to enter a text prompt, but also add reference images to ensure the AI understands exactly what the user is hoping for in terms of a video outcome.
So far, the new generative AI video creator is only available to a limited number of users across the US, but those users haven’t been shy in sharing their results so far! Look a the image below and you’ll see a very realistic vibrant, brightly-coloured crocheted elephant in a desert, right? Well, this is just one example of the capabilities of the new tool, so we’re very excited to see what else the software can create.
Google Veo Vs OpenAI Sora
While Veo’s debut has received mixed reactions, impressing some while leaving others skeptical about its latency and capabilities compared to Sora, Google is pulling out all the stops. They’ve invited filmmakers to experiment with Veo, even showcasing a short film by Donald Glover at I/O 2024 (you can watch this below). OpenAI, on the other hand, is gearing up to release Sora publicly later this year, with plans to integrate it with video editing giants like Adobe Premiere Pro. The rivalry is heating up, but the jury’s still out on which AI video generator will win!
Overall, critics claim that Googel Veo stands out for its realism and visual control, adapting to diverse inputs and delivering videos with remarkable consistency. It understands cinematic prompts like “time-lapse” and “aerial shot,” which sets it apart from Sora, known for its occasional frame inconsistencies. Veo simplifies video creation with intuitive commands such as “pan,” “zoom,” or “explosion,” making the process smoother than Sora.
Additionally, Veo excels in video length continuity, allowing effortless extensions with seamless frame transitions, unlike Sora, which can produce jarring inconsistencies. Veo’s advanced editing capabilities enable the creation of coherent narratives from a single prompt, whereas Sora lacks this narrative generation and editing prowess.
