We’ve just hit the huge milestone of planting 5,000 trees with Ecologi!
At Limely, we care deeply about our environmental impact. That’s why in 2022, we teamed up with the climate action initiative Ecologi, to offer greener websites to our clients. Since then, we’ve planted over 5,000 trees with over 1,000 planted in Madagascar, 900 in Kenya and over 600 in Ethiopia. You can view all of the trees we’ve planted here, just click on the plant!
Making Websites Greener
If you didn’t already know, the internet in general puts a huge strain on the environment thanks to its hefty carbon footprint. In 2024, it is estimated that traditional web hosting is as polluting as the airline industry! This is largely due to the intensive energy needed to keep data processing centres functioning at capacity and to keep these facilities cool whilst doing so. In recent years, industry has heavily pushed towards carbon-neutral website hosting. One great step forward for Limely is that our hosting solution uses UK-based data centres powered by 100% renewable sources, adhering to ISO 50001 and 14001 accreditations. A great step towards a greener internet!
But over the past 6 months, we’ve doubled-down our efforts to be more sustainable by establishing Ecohosting packages that go far beyond just being powered by 100% renewable energy. In collaboration with Ecologi and Nimbus, we’ve created packages that offset carbon emissions produced as a result of the data transfer that occurs when a customer visits one of our client’s websites, which is something that’s often overlooked.
We do this by first using the latest in compression and optimisation technologies to ensure our clients’ websites are as small as possible in size. We then calculate the CO2 generated by the website’s visitors (depending on the exact size of the website and its average traffic levels) before calculating the number of trees needed to absorb this CO2. To put things into perspective; a typical small to medium sized website produces 0.52g of CO2 for every website visit.
An average small-medium sized website with about 10,000 visitors per month creates the same amount of CO2 that would be absorbed by 3 trees over the course of a year. To offset this, we could simply plant 3 trees. But, being Limely, we wanted to take things one step further and introduced Ecohosting packages. Our Eco Lite hosting package ensures that we’re planting over 200 trees per year, per website, to ensure that we are doing far more than just offsetting CO2 emissions!
