Even the prettiest, shiniest website might not be pulling in the right traffic if it hasn’t been optimised for all devices. What is a responsive website?

We probably don’t need to tell you that your business needs a website. It’s essentially common knowledge that an online presence is key these days. However, not everyone understands the importance of a responsive website. What makes a website worthy of this description? Well, as a web agency we think we have a pretty good idea.

First things first, it’s important to know the difference between responsive and mobile-friendly. If a website is mobile-friendly, it can simply be accessed on a phone. This means that you’ll see the website in exactly the same way as on a computer. Now, of course, this is a major problem as there’s a huge size difference! Pinching to zoom in and squinting is not ideal when you’re quickly trying to look something up.

Of course, some websites are optimised for mobile. This means that they are built and coded with mobile in mind and aren’t particularly ideal to access on a PC. This is where responsiveness comes in – it solves the issues with the previous two designs. Here is what makes a website responsive: it automatically resizes and adjusts to any device. Whether you’re using a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a desktop computer, a responsive website will look just as great and feel just as smooth.

Designing and building responsive sites

We’ve got plenty of expertise in this area and we don’t think you should trust any agency that doesn’t consider responsiveness as a priority. Here are some of the ways to make a website responsive:

  • Stacking elements for a streamlined look – this avoids that dreaded pinching and squinting
  • Allowing images to scale up or down depending on the size of the browser
  • Resizing text dependant on browser size

An easy way to check if a website is responsive is to open it in a desktop browser and simply resize the browser. Now it’s time to get down to the real juice of this blog post – the main squeeze, if you will. There’s no point in trying to prove an argument or make a claim if you haven’t got the data to back it up. It’s simple stuff, really. 1. Global online traffic

As we mentioned at the very start of this post, mobile traffic makes up over 50% of all online traffic around the world. By the end of this year, that number is predicted to reach 79%. (Sweor.com)

3. First thing in the morning

According to research by Super Monitoring, 57% of people wouldn’t recommend a business if their website is poorly designed. That’s a lot of word-of-mouth to be missing out on. (SocPub)

5. Issues with poor mobile sites

61% of web users won’t return to a website if they had issues with accessing it on mobile. This is according to Google so you know it’s worth bearing in mind! (McKinsey.com)

6. E-commerce share

This one is for you e-commerce people out there. Smart mobile devices have a 57% share of visits to retail sites. (Sweor.com)

7. Getting on board with responsiveness

Since Google changed its algorithms to mobile-first in 2015, 25% of websites have invested in an optimisation strategy. It’s time you joined them! (Smashing Magazine)

8. Load time abandonment

Just over half of mobile sites will be abandoned if they take over 3 seconds to load. Responsiveness takes load time into consideration so it’s worth bearing this in mind. (DoubleClick by Google)

9. Quicker load time = longer visits

10. Social sharing
