Values, personability, budget and expertise… these are a few things that can have a huge impact on the web design agency you choose to take over your digital presence.
So, the time has come to get a new website. We’ve all been there: it’s an inevitable part of the world we live in. Whether you’re worried about usability, low traffic or poor conversion rates, there’s an agency out there who will be able to help you. Not every company has the resources for an in-house web team, which is where an agency comes in pretty useful. Like us! Here’s what you need to think about when hiring a web design agency.
This is what you should think about before teaming up with an agency
As a web design agency ourselves, we know a thing or two about chatting to new clients and getting them on board. But we’re not ruthless salespeople, we want our clients to feel like they’ve got the right agency for them and their website. If you’re feeling a little confused when it comes to hiring the best people for the job, you should consider these things first.
Know what you want
Whilst we can definitely make recommendations (and we will), it’s helpful for you to have an idea in mind first. Are you looking for a new website from scratch? Does your website look good but struggle to perform? Or are you just totally lost and need an agency to hold your hand navigating the world of web? Before your initial meeting with an agency, you should have an objective. Be prepared for this to change as you become more educated though, which leads us to our next point…
Listen and learn
You’re approaching an agency because they’re the experts, right? So, trust their advice. Sure, you should have a list of wants and needs for your website but make sure you listen to any recommendations made by the agency. You can usually tell if someone is interested in your wallet or the genuine success of your company. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or give counter-arguments. After all, you know your business best.
Do your research
Please don’t just settle for the cheapest option. If you really are tight for cash, there are plenty of great website-building platforms out there that can generate simple but decent sites. However, if you’re looking for something that’s bespoke, a little more complex or you have a specific feature in mind, you should remember that low cost usually means low quality. After all, you get what you pay for. But don’t be blinded by smoke and mirrors – it’s easy to get fooled by fancy offices and exotic ‘locations’. How do you tackle this price dilemma? Shop around, check previous work and visit the team in person to get a real feel for what a web design agency is really about.
Check their own website and social media
Never mind just their client work, what are agencies doing for themselves? Are they active on social and is their website regularly updated? If not, this can be a major red flag. If an agency isn’t doing its best to boost its own online reputation, what will it do for yours? And not only that, but you can really get to grips with a company’s values and personality by checking out their social channels.
Have a budget in mind
It’s difficult for an agency to quote you a price straight away, especially if you’re looking for a whole new site. You should be wary of anyone who gives you a flat fee as this means they haven’t considered the bespoke requirements of your website. If you can give a rough budget that you’re willing to spend, your web design agency will be able to give you a clearer picture of what they can deliver for you.
Think about specialisms
Are you a large-scale ecommerce brand? Then you’ll probably want specialists in Magento. But this should be a no-brainer! A trustworthy web design agency will be honest from the get-go about what they can do – and what they can’t. Carefully think about whether you want to go for a full-service agency or a smaller but more specialised team. The skills, personability and quality can greatly differ.
Plan for the future
Consider any ongoing work that will need doing after your new website is live. Websites aren’t just a one-time purchase; at least, they shouldn’t be. Enquire about an agency’s retainer rates for things like security and software updates, as well as ongoing design work for seasonal promotions and changes in trends. It’s much better to stick with the web design agency who built your website to look after it in the future (as long as you were happy with their work, of course!). We never kick our clients out the door once we’ve pushed their site live – every new project is a lifelong relationship to us.
