Dedicated video calling to compete with Facetime

This May saw the unveiling of Google Duo at this years I/O conference and now Google has finally launched the free HD video calling app available for both Android and iOS.

Google Duo lets you make one-to-one video calls with anyone else with the app, regardless of their device.
All you need to link up is each other’s phone number.

Basic, but with reason

Right now, it’s beautifully basic but there is one notable feature in ‘Knock Knock’, allowing users to preview the caller prior to picking up, unlike Facetime.

The reason for building Duo was to explore the possible results of a new framework, looking to increase quality, speed and consistency in video calling; features that some competitors in Facebook/Skype have always struggled with. With Duo, the app adjusts the video resolution smoothly dependant on your current connection speed, seamlessly remaining connected if WiFi drops and cellular data takes over.

The app is rolling out worldwide over the next few days on Google Play and the App Store; let us know what you think of it in the comments.
